Windows 10: The final countdown – It’s time to act.

Windows 10: The final countdown – It’s time to act.
21 May 2025 Emma Alsos

Windows 10 has served us well. But its time is running out. Microsoft will end free support for Windows 10 in October 2025. This means no more bug fixes, no more new features, and having to pay a premium for security updates and support.

If you’re ahead of the game, you’ve already asked for our help, and if you’re happily working across all your computers with Windows 11, then feel free to sit smugly and ignore the rest of this blog!

If you’re not fully migrated to Windows 11, or you’re not sure – then it’s time for us to help you NOW.

To be clear, this change isn’t just about getting new features. It’s about ensuring your PCs stay secure, fast, and capable.

Why you need to upgrade now – What are the risks of waiting?

Security Concerns

When Microsoft stops supporting Windows 10, your computer becomes vulnerable. No more updates mean no more security patches and as Windows 10 approaches its end-of-support date, the risk of security threats grows. For businesses, this also risks non-compliance with CE and GDPR.

Hackers will target unsupported systems, knowing they won’t receive updates. Upgrading to Windows 11 will ensure you receive the latest security updates, keeping your data and personal information safe.

Further, Microsoft have announced that support for Microsoft 365 running on Windows 10 computers will also cease on this date…further increasing the risk of a vulnerability being exploited by fraudsters.

Potential compatibility issues

Software developers will eventually stop supporting Windows 10 and new applications or program updates may not be compatible. This can lead to performance issues and lost productivity. By upgrading you ensure compatibility with the latest software.

Hardware Requirements for Windows 11

Not all current PCs are going to be able to run Windows 11. The new operating system has specific hardware requirements

Many older laptops and PCs don’t meet these specifications and that might mean you need new hardware. If your current PC won’t take the load, you need to start thinking about an upgrade NOW.

The good news is that there are a lot of other benefits to upgrading your hardware.

Business disruption

Starting an upgrade for your office now will give you time for a smooth rollout. There’s still room to upgrade one department at a time to minimise disruption and spread out the costs.

The complicated bit

Microsoft are selling extended support for Windows 10, which could get you past October 2025.

But, Microsoft 365 support for Windows 10 users also stops in October…so if you use M365, it’s going to be unsupported from October, whether you’ve purchased a W10 support extension or not.

If you don’t use Microsoft 365, then paying for extended support could be a short-term option, but bear in mind that costs ramp up significantly for the 2nd and 3rd years…

Avoid the last-minute rush

Upgrading now avoids the last-minute rush. As the end-of-support date approaches, there’ll be a scramble to upgrade. The increased demand for new kit comes with potential price increases and supply chain delays, as well as queues for support.

The good news – Benefits of upgrading to Windows 11

Enhanced performance

Windows 11 is designed to be faster and more efficient. It’s optimised for current generation hardware, providing better performance – regardless of what you use your PC for, you’ll notice the difference. Applications run smoother and boot times are quicker.

Improved features

Windows 11 brings a host of new features. The redesigned Start Menu and Taskbar offer a fresh, modern look. Snap Layouts and Snap Groups help you organise your workspace, and Virtual Desktops allow you to create different desktops for different tasks. These features can enhance productivity and will make your PC experience more enjoyable.

Better user interface

Windows 11 offers a cleaner, more intuitive user interface. The Start Menu is centred, providing easy access to your most-used apps, and the Taskbar is simplified and customisable. These changes will make it easier to navigate and use your PC.

Improved multitasking

Snap Layouts and Snap Groups enhance multitasking. You can easily organise open windows and switch between tasks. Virtual Desktops allow you to create separate desktops for work and personal use to reduce the clutter and keep you more productive.

Integrated Microsoft Teams

Windows 11 has Microsoft Teams built in. This makes it easier to connect with colleagues, or friends and family. You can quickly start a chat or video call from the Taskbar too. The integration is particularly useful for remote work and staying connected.

Improved virtual desktops

Virtual Desktops in Windows 11 are more powerful and customisable. You can set different backgrounds for each desktop and organise your tasks better which is ideal for separating work from personal use.

More to come

Microsoft will continue to develop new features for Windows 11, with more updates in the pipeline, including a new file-sharing interface that allows you to share files by simply dragging them to the top of the screen.

And if you’ve had to upgrade your hardware

There’s good news there too. Newer PCs come with better processors, more RAM, and faster storage. These improvements provide a significant boost in performance, as well as being more energy efficient and future-proof, with the enabling of AI tools.

How to upgrade

Check compatibility

First, check if your current PC meets the Windows 11 requirements. You can use the PC Health Check tool from Microsoft. This tool will tell you if your hardware is up to the job.

Backup your data

Before upgrading, backup all your files and data, using an external hard drive or cloud storage. This ensures you don’t lose important information during the upgrade process.

Follow upgrade instructions

Follow Microsoft’s instructions for upgrading. This may involve downloading the Windows 11 installation file and running the setup. If your PC isn’t compatible, consider purchasing a new one that meets the requirements.
